Can some of you experts check my work?

I've been reading on here for awhile about how to bypass the smog system on a kz, specifically mine, which is a '81 kz550 ltd. I think I got it right, so if I can figure out how to add more than one pic at a time, I'd like ya'll to check it to make sure I got it right. The first pic is what was left when I got done. And before anyone asks, no, I didn't use the hammer in the pic, it is only keeping the door open.

Here's what I used to plug the valve cover holes.

I used this to plug the hole in the carbs.

Here's a shot of the side where you can see both plugs. Please let me know if I forgot anything.

Did you also plug the hole in the airbox?

I'm pulling the airbox and putting in pods. Sorry, I forgot to mention that. Thanks for asking.

looks good to me,id leave the airbox on there if the boots arent destroyed to save a lot of tuning issues

Thanks, Plummen. I've been reading a bit here that tuning pods can be a nightmare. I'm going to carefully pack my airbox away just in case I have the same issues. Only problem is, it looks like a nightmare to take it out. I haven't got that far yet. I just wanted to tackle the anit-smog garbage first.

What you did was good, but somewhat temporary.

The rubber caps on the valve cover will breakdown quickly with heat. This will lead to cracking and leaks which may cause some backfiring in the exhaust.

The sheet metal screw in the vac hose may not seal perfectly either. You want to use something smoother. You can cut sections of a knitting needle to get smooth plugs. Don't get the little, generic rubber caps from a parts store. They breakdown real fast. Stick with vac hose with a smooth plug. You can also use the head on a small allen bolt if it's smooth.

Also, here's a link to a mod I use on those carbs to control the fast-idle speed during choke use.

Thanks for the advise. I think my screws will hold, they're really tight. But the valve cover plugs may very well break down quick when the engine gets hot. What's a better way to plug those two?

Larry, I've heard that here alot about the pods. I may change my mind, but I think I'm going to ruin the rubber boots when I get the carbs off. I'm sure 30 years ago they were nice and flexible, but they are so stiff now I can't get the carbs out. And I have to do that to fix the oil leaks. So I may try the pods (I already have them) and see what happens. I can always put the box back in and pray I can find more boots. Unless ya'll know of a way to get them off without destroying them.
