Z1 Fuel Connections
24 Dec 2010 02:41
Hi Guys,
I am finishing up a 5 year restoration of my dad's '75 Z1. I am ready to fire her up but I ran into a snag. It's been so long since I pulled the carbs off that I forgot how the fuel line connections are routed. Can anyone help? I know the bottom connections are for overflow I routed those off to the bottom, but the rest is driving me crazy!! Do I "Y" connect the two connector from the petcock? Are the upper and lower carb fuel connections on each half of the assembly also "Y-ed"?
HELP!
Ray

on a stock petcock there are two nipples. u run to one side one to the other side, on the cabs there are two set of larger nipples between the carbs on each side, the lowers are fuel the uppers are vents, they go to the airbox,(if ur still running one)
check pg 71 in the manual
the over flow are the nipples out of the bottom of the carb bowls,

Refering to pic shown below:
Two upper VENT nipples ---
There's a separate hose to each float bowl VENT nipple.
Hoses exit to open air beneath seat or under bike.
It's unnecessary to join the vent hoses with a T fitting.
Am thinking vent hoses routed into airbox on later year models after 1976 (EPA regs).
Two FUEL inlets ---
Carbs are fed by dual fuel hoses.
Petcock has two fuel outlet nipples.
A separate fuel hose from petcock connects to each carb fuel pipe.
It's unnecessary to join the fuel hoses with a T fitting (unless using a replacement petcock that has only a single fuel outlet nipple).
OVERFLOW outlets ---
The 4 outlet nipples on bottoms of float bowls attach to overflow hoses exiting underneath the bike.
Earlier model Z1 carbs had a large bottom-fitted drain plug (fast main jet access), with no overflow nipples (and no overflow circuit).
If fitted with Mikuni 29mm smoothbore carbs, there are no overflow nipples, and only a single fuel pipe T inlet.
May use either petcock fuel outlet nipple and cap off the other petcock fuel outlet nipple.
An ordinary vacuum plug (cap) functions quite well for this purpose.
For additional information, see Z1E carb identification section:

Good Fortune!

Guys that for the quick replies!!!
This really helps. I went back and forth through the manual and could not find anything relating to the routing of the fuel lines, maybe I didn't look good enough.
In any event I should be able to fire the bike up in a day or so.
Safe Riding,
Ray
