i bought the bike and cleaned the carbs. got her started with some ether, but it immediatly goes to redline and i have to shut it off with the key. i have adjusted the idle knob, and mixture screws nothing helps. i still nee to check for an vacuum leak but i thinki would have found one major enough to cause a 9000 rpm idle. please help.

Ummm, stuck throttle, major air leak?

By the way, if you have to use either to start your KZ there is something wrong as you have found out.

yeah i figured it just needed the ether to help after its been sitting. i think i may have fount the air leak. the nipple?vacuum port on top of carb #3 is not plugged, but do you think that this is a big enough leak to cause the 9k idle?

I wouldnt think it would rev to 9k but you never know. Plug it and try it out. Can you check to see if all 4 carb slides are closing fully?

Last time I encountered this problem it was caused by a severely misadjusted throttle cable. Make sure all the throttle cable ends are properly seated in the adjusters at both ends of the cable. Next try screwing in the adjusters all the way. See how it idles then, the throttle cable will probably have a ton of slack...but if that has cured the engine raceing problem readjust the idle speed with the carb adjuster screw then try to adjust the slack out of the throttle cable with the adjuster at the carb end of cable. Finish fine tuning throttle cable tension with the adjuster at the twist grip. Try and find a manual that covers your bike as these adjustments are part of general maintenance and there will be helpful pictures and model specific instructions. Factory service manual is best but a Clymers or something will cover this pretty well too. And yeah, ya gotta have that vacuum nipple plugged.
