Need more slack in my throttle cable
07 Oct 2010 02:34 - 07 Oct 2010 02:38
I gave up on the pumper carbs that came with my '79 LTD and put a set of GS1000 carbs (no accelerator pump) on it. Pretty easy bolt on except for the choke. I worked around that by removing the springs from the choke plungers so the choke can easily be engaged by moving the rod up and down.
Only problem now is the throttle return cable needs a bit more slack to fit on the carbs. I've loosened it up as much as I can. Just need another half an inch or so.
What's the best way to do this? Should I try to carefully cut some of the plastic sheath away from the cable?
Thanks, Mike

Yes, you can try the cutting/manipulating method, and it will likely work fine.
Or you could jsut buy an appropriate length cable, but this might be difficult to find.
Do it, just DO IT.

I think you will find the plastic sheath is only a coating on a spiral steel sheath. Ed

I went to the local motorcycle shop and he made a new cable for me using some of the fittings from the old cable. The wire and the sheath are new. Cost $30 bucks. We also shortened the cable a couple of inches so it fits the bike better with low bars.
That was the throttle return cable. I guess I will take the pull cable in and have a new, shorter one made too. Sixty bucks for a set, maybe more expensive than some other places but these are custom made length, I figure it's worth it. And I like giving business to the cycle parts shop down the street.

Motion Pro will make custom/obsolete cables too.
Also, there was someone (I think) on this forum that melted off the cable end, modified the sheath, then molded the end back on.
