81 kz650 carb problems, i think...

Soooo about a year ago I took my bike apart...nothing internal just making it look more my style. With that I did take off the air box and currently rocking those generic pod filters. So it took me forever to get my bike back together and now that the frame and electrical are all good to go, the bike doesnt run now :(

the ONLY thing changed that would affect the way it runs is the pod filters. I do not know carbs at all so my pops is helping me since hes been riding since he was younger than i am. He said he adjusted the fuel mixture and what not and checked the jets. and i do not know the specific settings but he stated that at best, he could get the motor idling good and sounding strong (before it would putter and make a gargling sound) but with those settings it just had no power at all. He said the stock jets on there are really small, and his best guess is that the engine is not getting enough fuel since the pods have almost no air restriction.

Only solution we know is to get the stage 3 dyno jet kit, which is the only one available i believe.I do not have aftermarket exhaust but was going to make my own.

if any of you have some expert advice on whether that is the way to go or not please chime in. im still new to bikes and have no clue. thanks

cool. i guess that stage 3 kit is the way to go, but i noticed it doesn't come with pilot jets. just two sets of main jets. I looked through all the pilot jets that came up when searching under my bike model and year but all that came up never said anything about fitting the 650 models only the bigger bikes. maybe I'm missing something.
if anyone has links to or can tell me what size pilots to get if i need to get them separately that would be cool

I'm sure writing something useful would have taken less energy than you trying to figure out how to attach a smiley face old man.

No worries though. Must not have much useful information anyway since you've only had to change the oil on your stock bike for 33 years

It might be cheaper to just buy the jets. The stock jet needles don't have any grooves for adding clips, but I believe you can use shims of some sort (small washers?). From what others have reported the jet needles in some kits have the wrong taper. However, I don't know much about this kind of stuff, so do whatever seems appropriate.

Edit - PS: the pods will probably be less problematic than on some other bikes since you don't have CV carbs (assuming the carburetors are stock). I think pods work better w mechanical slide carbs... pretty sure anyway.
