Please help with float height

Got a 1982 KZ 750 4cyl.
I am havng a hard time getting my float high right.
When I bought the bike it came with 3 different needles.
It reads in the manual that the float height should be 18.6mm.
The new needles stick up higher in the seats then the ones it had in it.
I bent the tangs to measure that.18.6mm
It started great, but when I gave her some gas the take off it immediately bogged down and stalled out.
What is the problem? Are the floats sitting too low or too high?

Thanks guys.

May not be the floats. When u say "started up fine, then gave it some gas and it bogged...",did u allow bike to warm up to operating temp before taking off?Kaws are cold natured-my KZ1000 starts fine on the choke, but if I go off choke immediately and try to take off,it bogs as well.Let it warm up before taking off. Also, were carbs cleaned? If the 750 is like the 1000 ,ur still on pilots until about 3/4 throttle and pilots/passages are very hard to get clean.Just a thought.bj

Float height when measured correctly with the carbs up side down on the bench should be OK. The Service manual however has a more accurate way, A "Clear Tube Method", this makes sure that the fuel level is correct in all 4. Also bogging could be from other issues, still plugged up carb circuits, torn slide diaphragms or leaking covers, Ignition advancer stuck at base position, vacuum leaks, carb sync to far out.

You have to set the fuel level with a clear tube or it won't be right. Even being 1mm off is a big deal.

I first set mine on the Bench with height gauge, then double checked with clear tube, perfecto on all 4 exactly the same. So many carbs out there, and most have a setting for height of float inverted in the service manual as well as the rebuild kits. You might even get lucky if you have an externally adjustable float level like a Holley.

Not sure on the CV carbs on the 750's, but on my round slide Mikuni's, the upside down float height measurement wasn't anywhere close to accurate or even consistent. The only way to adjust them that was reliable was the clear tube method.
