Float bowl fuel level tip.....
16 Sep 2010 14:25 - 16 Sep 2010 14:28
For bikes that have only a drain bolt in the bottom of the bowl and no nipple, I found that you can make do without any special attachments, nor having to screw the tubing into the bolt hole.
My KZ750B has a ~6mm bolt. I just removed the bolt and held one end of a 1/4" i.d. clear vinyl tube, about ten inches long, with very little pressure in series with the hole in the bowl. The other end can be taped to the upper carb body. I opened the petcock, and the hose quickly filled with gas and stopped at the fuel level in the bowl.
Easy as pie. The hose can be pre-marked at the carb body/bowl mating line using a fine tipped Sharpie, and then after the hose fills with gas the hose can be marked at the fuel level. All you have to do then is measure the distance between the two lines. Or, eyeball it like I did.
The end of the hose needs to be a clean 90 degree cut to assure a good hand held connection to the hole in the bowl.
Maybe everybody already knows this, but I'm just finding this out. Don't mean to insult anybody's intelligence but my own.

It's a good tip, and yes it has been posted before. However, it bears repeating periodically. Not everyone here is an old hand. Thanks for posting.

Easier, still...........
Use a 1/4" o.d. clear vinyl hose, and slip a 1/4" vacuum cap on the end of the hose. Punch a hole in the tip of the vacuum cap to allow gas to flow through. Then jam the vacuum cap tip against the float bowl hole. Now you don't need to fuss with getting a good seal between hose and bowl........man, I'm gellin'!

On my VM26 carbs, I used a
percussion cap nipple
(for black power rifles). It has the right thread (6mm x .75), and I can slip a vinyl tube over the tapered end.

I used slightly larger clear tubing and I taper the end. Eventually I found some thin silicone rubber fuel line that snug fits into the drain plug hole and has a snug fit into the inside of a piece of clear tube and I use that.
