pods
15 Sep 2010 14:04
Ok. This is what I got. I have a 1983 kz650 4cyl. Swapped the carbs and throttle off a 73ish model kz750. For some reason the jets in the original 650 carbs were larger than the ones I replaced them with which was off a 750. Kinda strange to me seeing how it still has stock exhaust. And I have the original airbox. it still doesn't run right or at all. My air box fills with fuel and shoots flames out of the exhaust. Gettin too much fuel I'm guessing. On the new carbs it looks like I have 3 lines to feed fuel to them. What is the best thing to do with the two open lines. Just block them off? And pods vs airbox. What's better? Thx in advance.

So its carb problems. You should ost up the complete info from this set of 750 carbs, have you rebuilt them, what the jets are. Have you set fuel level: clear tube method. Have you made sue of the engine and ignition? Compression test, plug wires/ coils working and on the correct cylinders, valve adjustment, is the ignition advancer working and lubed?
How is the rubber intake manifolds, have you checked for vacuum leaks?
I think the question, Pods or Airbox is a personal choice. Those carbs can be set for either as they are a mechanical slide valve carb. Its the CV style that is harder to tune for pods.
Pictures of the carbs and these lines please.

I would stick with the stock airbox at least until you solve the current problem assuming it aligns with the different carbs. I'm amazed you found carbs from a '73 KZ750 (also known as 750RS or Z2) as I believe they were only sold in Japan and there were less than 4,000 made. They used Mikuni VM26 carbs. Why did you swap to larger carbs? Was the bike running well before you made the change? Ed

The carbs that came on my bike were mikunis. The trottle just sits in the "holdster" with the diaphrams and one jet. The ones I replaced them with are keihins with the screw in throttle, diaphrams and the double jet set up.the keins had no stripped screws and looked untouched. The mikunis looked horrible.stripped screws, chipped jets, you know the usual 27 yr old carb. Carbs are soaking till tomorrow. Then the pods are soon to come. Airbox is a major pain. If it runs fine with pods than its worth it to me to swap it over.

How do I figure out which model I have? The carb boots on z1enterprises say that the boots that fit a kz650 will not fit a kz650 h1. Its a 4 cyl with no badges. Can I run the vins and if so where?

To id the bike you need the vin#. The frame # is on the head stock. There should be a sticker there, and it should also be stamped into the head stock. The engine # is stamped on the engine on the (as you sit on the bike) right hand side just below the carbs. If it is an '83 then IIRC, it can only be 1 of 2 models offered that year, either a F4 or a H3.
