CV34 Pilot mixture screws, again
23 Aug 2010 08:08
Is anyone aware of a source for these screws beyond the carb kits sold at Z1 or Old Bike Barn? The part in question is Kawasaki part number:
The soft brass keeps getting stripped because one of the carb's threads must be rough or something. The threads just begin to catch and it is very hard to turn it. It is not at all like the other 3 adjustment screws.
While I am asking, my thought to try to reduce the resistance those threads are given was to take a tap of the appropriate size and run it through the threads to take off an corrosion or spurs they may have developed. Is this idea a good one?
Code:
16014 16014-1011 SCREW,PILOT ADJUST

It looks like an active # from Maw Kaw, any dealer should be able to find price and availability, mine shows $11 online.
Threads can be quite a ordeal, if you use the correct tap, be careful not to miss and start a second cut. This would destroy the original thread. It's hard to say without seeing it, but could you clean the area better with a round brass wire brush of the near same diameter?

When I looked at the parts diagrams it said the part was cancelled for me. Is there somewhere else you looked?
I thought about the brash brush idea but I did some searching online and at a few local shops and I couldn't find anything near the same size. Any suggestions?
Edit: I just called my local Kaw dealer. They looked it up on their system and it said the part was no longer available.

Have you tried calling
Z1
? They can do lots of stuff other than just what is advertised on thier website.
Tapping/Die setting is the only way to restore threads.
Re die the threads on the screw and tap the hole, both with lots of oil, then just screw it in.
GL.

or maybe CyclePartsNation

There are a lot of small brushes out there, try a Auto Parts Store, brushes for engine oil galley cleaning.
I just plugged the part # into my Dealers search function, and it comes up with a price, but I have had a couple of times NLA after a phone call. Did you do a NOS search, ebay? I think you'll get close enough to a kit cost that it would be easier to get a decent kit.

The only place I have seen those screws is in the carb kits from Z1 or Sirius Consolidated.
However. I have a couple of used ones which look ok. If you want them send me a PM and you can have them free.
Dont use my email as that address does not work and I cant change it
Be carefull with those threads or with the hole which the point of the screw goes into or you can bugger up the complete carb very easily

Yeah true. The thread pitch is not common. It's like a 6x1.25 or 6x1.50 pitch. If you're not careful, you WILL end up having to replace that carb cause the pilot screw is jammed in.Been there.

I'll leave it alone then. I checked my plugs and it looked like that carb was doing okay as far as mixture.
Any other suggestions on how to make it a bit smoother? They last hardly any time and get stripped.

Not sure what you mean. Pilot mixture screws get stripped ?
If it's working ok maybe just leave it alone. I think I might have adjusted mine once in the past 3 years, I'm lazy and like the idea of set and forget
To make the screw turn smother maybe try cleaning the threads in the carb with a pipecleaner or Q tip and a dab of carb cleaner or WD40.
Good luck

Might be able to take an undamaged screw to a good hardware store and obtain the proper tap.
Good Fortune!

Sorry JR, my last post was not very clear.
The pilot mixture screws get stripped. As you said, since it seems from the plug that the mixture is fine I'll be leaving it.
