1977 - KZ650B1 carb cleaning

I was reading about cleaning my carbs in the Clymer manual, and If I am correct it said not too remove the carbs from the plate they are mounted to. I dont have a tank big enough too soak all of them at once. Any suggestions ... PEACE Larry

Hey Larry,

I'd avoid it if you can. I've cleaned three sets of carbs without taking them apart, but then, none of them were really gross. After taking the bowl, floats, and removable jets out, mainly used carb cleaner and compressed air to clean off the grime and blow out the passages.

Oh, not sure what type of carbs you have, but that era Mukuni's used an air pilot screw that you'll need to remove to make sure those passages are clear too. Before you completely remove them, screw them in to see how many turns out you are from lightly seated so you know what to put it back to. I'd been told on the site that it's usually 1.25 turns out, but all of mine were at ~1.5 turns out. I'm guessing more air for the higher altitude (CO/WY)

It's fine to seperate the carbs. It just means that a goo vacuum manometer sync will be necessary to have proper operation later.

But... if you've got your carbs off your bike to clean them, I suspect yuo need that anyways, cause it makes a huge world of difference in hoe the bike runs/idles and power.

Thank you for the information fellas. I appreciate it. And
Patton I neglected to tell you folks the carbs are not stock. They are Mikuni VM28mm, I believe from late Z1A or early Z1B. The ones with the angled top cover held with only two screws. Also, good advice, wearing eye protection. Thanx for your time and efforts ... PEACE Larry
