Color of the sparkplug center insulators? If white, you're far too lean, Black being rich, and a light tan, just about right.

How long do you warm up the engine? These air cooled engines will run really hot without air going through the cooling fins.

Would also check ignition timing.

And assure correct spark plugs are installed.

nathanhopkins, sounds like you have unburned fuel being ignited in the exhaust system. You need to check ignition and fuel system for too rich or ignition system for poor or no spark.

While checking the Ignition be sure that the advancer is working, as if not the timing will be retarded at RPM which will cause high exhaust temps. I've seen Super Trap muffler inserts melt from this on big block chev's.
