fuel tap

This may seem like a dumb question... Where should the switch be pointing for regular use, reserve, ect? Should the wing part be covering ON or opposite end pointed toward on?

I do not see what model of bike you have. On mine, the wing goes back for on, down for prime, and forward for reserve.
1981 Kawasaki CSR 1000

First bike ever at 14 years old was 1969 Honda CL 175.
Bought a brand new Honda CM400T at 16 years old in 1979.

there might be an arrow printed on one side of the switch itself. in my experience has always been you want the wing pointed opposite of the desired setting.

The petcock lever on my 81 650 has arrows on each side. The lever/arrows point to the desired setting: RES-ON-PRI.

Exact petcock details are likely in the manual.
