Pod Filters - the effect of running them...
27 May 2010 12:54
no, not the usual airbox versus pod discussion, but something very important.
If you pull the stock airbox and replace it with pod filters, MAKE SURE YOU SUPPORT THE CARBS.
The weight of the carbs and pod filters will shred the carb holder very quickly.
A bank of carbs full of fuel with a set of K&N pods weighs well over 10lb - that is all unsupported weight bouncing up and down as you ride.
Fabricate one or two straps - something as simple as a couple of strong zip ties looped over the frame.

This is very good info Jeff.
I too have seen the results of an unsupported rack...
We all know what that leads to.

I'm happy the Z1 expert agrees with me on this one.
I've said this for years, but there's guys on here that claim they have run 30 yrs without the manifolds going to crap with unsupported carbs to which I call balony. If not balony, then exceptionally lucky anyway.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Count me in with the "balony / lucky" gang because I've never had a bit of trouble running pods on KZ motors with OEM. In fact, this is the first time I've heard anyone even mention it.
I see lots of KZ heads and the intake boots are never destroyed from that. Aged and cracked..for sure but not shreded up from running unsupported carbs with pod filters....
Must be more balony / lucky guys out there than the other kind... :woohoo:

+ 1 to what larry say's. i only have two my bikes with air boxes all the rest either use pods or stacks and i never have lost a manifold because of it.never have my carbs fallen off. just one of those things i never think of or have a problem with.
