initial carb setup & plumbing

23 Mar 2010 06:52

I am rebuilding a 1978 KZ400 B-1 and I am ready to start it up for the first time after replacing a piston and ring set.
I installed a rebuild kit in each carb after a good cleaning. After filling the tank with fresh gas, I swiched on the pet cock and the right drain tube started draining raw gas! I am not getting any fuel to the combustion chaimbers as well!
Also, I am unclear as to how all of the tubing is to be routed.
Please help!!:S

Make sure part # 30 (drain screws) are closed completely.

You just need to vacuum balance the carbs, and make sure that the mixture/air screws are at equal default setting (like 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.) For now...
Then it will purrrr like tiger!

You can use ordinary vacuum gauges if you like, but they will require restrictors. Restrictors are plugs that have a 1mm hole drilled through them, and they go in the vacuum gauge lines you connect closest to the engine.
They are very east to make! Use wood, plastic, metal... whatever so long as its big enough to plug the vacuum line. Make them 5mm long, then drill a 1mm bit right through.

Restrictors keep the gauge needles from flailing due to strong pulses of vacuum at idle.

GL!

I was able to fix the carb problem. It was a stuck float! Now both cylinders are firing nicely!
I will be attempting to go through and adjust the tappets, set the timing, and sink the carbs tomorrow.
I could use and welcome any suggestions, tricks, etc.
