No start / Hard start
21 Mar 2010 17:21 - 21 Mar 2010 17:22
Bike was hard starting last summer. It turned over many many times before it would start. I thought the coils were weak so this year i put two new dyna coils on rewired the coils with the WG mod and a new battery because it turned over so much last year it killed it.
Compression all good, checked ignitor good, lots of spark. the fuel had stabilizer prior to storage. I drained the carb bowls and blew compressed air through the drain holes and fuel line and vacuum line for shit and giggles.
I tried it again and it stumbled and after turning over about five or six times it started and ran fine. I took it for a drive and it ran great!!
I tried it after about ten minutes later and it started on first touch of the starter button. O left it for 4 hours and it is a no go!! I turned the fuel to pri,res still no go. It was hard cold starting since last year.
So we got fuel,we got spark what a missin??

Running without filter!
Are you angry at your bike or something?!?!
It really does suck in alot of garbage thats just floating around in the air, and makes it very lean.
Put the air filter in and use full choke to start w/no throttle input.

I am a bit angry at the old girl
I don't drive without a filter it is now in as it was drying before being oiled. It is in and it doesn't make a difference for my problem .... I only wish it did.
Seafoamed the shit out of the carbs and drained all the old gas out of them and the tank. Trying everything before those carbs come have to come off!!

Maybe but it has been an ongoing problem since the end of last riding season. I will see what if anything the seafoam /new gas will do if anything:ohmy:
I really am leaning toward a carb problem. But it kinda baffles me that it wouldn't stumble at all. I would think it would at least stumble if not start for a second and stop:(
Thanks for your suggestion

Well sounds like you have a lean condition. This could be caused by a simple choke cable adjustment, also a vacuum leak at the carb manifolds, then of course the circuits in the carb's could be restricted, low float level will cause a lean condition. If it is only when cold try enriching the mixture yourself with some added fuel to the intake while cranking, if it fires right away you know its lean.

Some good ideas. I might try something in the air intakes. Last year I tried starting fluid and it worked so you may be on to something
I don't have a choke cable just a lever on the side of the carbs.
Thanks

Well I wish mine would bump start but it just turns until the battery gives out. My bike had electronic ignition and no battery no start.
Does your petcock have two lines running to it if it does it is vacuumed controlled. The reserve would be with the tab part of the petcock pointed forward the on is pointed down and it would freeflow and if pointed back it would be activated by the vacuum of the motor.
I don't know if this helps but it's my 2 cents!!
Look at your library for a manual mine had one !!

curious:
my new (to me) MK11 is not starting by the starter motor turing over....it did start when i was kicking it at the garage sale.....and i finaly ,felt, thought,it was not flowing fresh fuel into the carbs...kinda like sandy said...so i ran down the street and bump started it...got the gas station added fresh high oct...and still no starter button firing up...bumped it rode it home...took it out to fiddle with yesterday and chrged bat...but would only bump start...
