Anybody know where I can download a manual on these carbs or maybe a Z1R specific website?

Mikuni has the VM manual here on their website. I believe that is also in the filebase section on this site. It doesn't mention the VM28SS but the tuning info should apply.

If you're looking for part numbers there are diagrams here. Just click "Parts Diagrams" under "Vehicle Information".

Hope that helps,

If you are willing to take a chance, pull out the slides and check the numbers etched into the needles. If you have a Haynes or a factory manual you can reference what carbs those needles apply to. When pulling carbs apart, check to see if it looks like somebody has previously had them apart (yellow paint on nuts etc.) and that way you may be lucky and have a non-molested set of carbs and proper I.D. of same. Good luck:)

Are there any I.D. numbers on the flange near the choke handle where the carbs slip into the boots? Roy

I had a quick look last night and didn't see any numbers on the flange.

Kawboy74 these carbs have definitely been apart more the once. The screws that hold the carbs to the flange show some wear. The bike had K&N pod filters and a Kerker 4 into 1 pipe so I would assume it's been re-jetted but I'll find out over the weekend when I dig in to them a little more.

I think I'm going to pass on the "lemon juice" cleaning method after seeing the results. They end up looking very dull from what I've seen.

I've had great results with Kleen-Flo carb cleaner in the past. It's a dip type method but you have to strip the carbs and remove all the rubber parts. Plus it's about $70 a gallon.

At this point I think I'll just strip the brass, soak it, spray the bodies with a can or two of the aerosol type carb cleaner and a small brush and rags and blow it out with compressed air.

There's a cheap soda blaster method post on here somewhere.
If you already have a compresser, for about $5~$10 you can make a soda blaster.

Here's a link:

Yeah I saw that, it might be worth a try. The results look pretty impressive.
