Carb ID
02 Dec 2009 18:14 - 02 Dec 2009 18:18
These where on the '73 Z1 I picked up a week ago.
I looked at all the pictures I can find on the internet and searched this site and Z1 Enterprises reference area and I can not find an exact match.
The bore diameter on the engine side of the carbs is about 28.5 mm. I just used a ruler, I'll bring home a caliper tomorrow and get a more accurate measurement.
The one thing that seems different from all the one I seen is the idle adjustment is on the bottom of these ones and all the other ones I see it's on the top.
Anyway here's a couple of pic.

Guessing 1978 KZ1000 which had 28mm Mikuni carbs with idle thumb screw on bottom and side-located pilot air screws.
EDIT -- 1978 KZ1000-D1 Z1R cafe racer and 1979 KZ1000 A3 standard and D2 models had 28mm Mikuni carbs with idle thumb screw on bottom and side-located pilot air screws.
The 1978 KZ1000-A2 standard model had 26mm carbs with top located idle thumb screw and bottom located pilot mixture screws.
So am thinking carbs at hand could be from 1978 KZ1000-D1 (Z1R cafe racer) or from 1979 KZ1000 A3 or D2 model.
Good Luck!

Thanks guys!
Jake those look like an exact match just much much cleaner! Thanks for posting your pics!
I'll probably tear into them this weekend and see what's in there. The lemon juice trick may be the way to go with the assembled bodies. I'll pull the brass out and soak them in carb cleaner.
Never heard of the lemon juice cleaning method until I came here. Seems to work from what some of you are saying.
VM28SS from a 78 Z1R it is.

If they measure 28mm on the inside of the engine side you have a nice set of carbs.
I just went through a similar set with The accelerator pump removed.
I jetted them 20/120. They had a needle jet with six slots. i positioned the clip in the fourth slot. Haven't checked the plugs since then.
Are there any I.D. numbers on the flange near the choke handle where the carbs slip into the boots? Roy

"Are there any I.D. numbers on the flange near the choke handle where the carbs slip into the boots?"
I'll check tonight.
Anybody know where I can download a manual on these carbs or maybe a Z1R specific website?

Hey Steve!
I'd go with the experts here!!
My carbs are def not the same as yours! It sounds like you do have Z1R carbs IMO!
I know no matter what you have, you'll have 'em workin' in no time!
