Is there a reason for the tube between the manifolds?

Why weren't they plugged like the fours?

Is this some kind of equalization tube to make it idle better?

It is a vacuum equalization tube to make the carbs balance better. Connect the two fittings with vacuum hose. I think you can use them to do carb balancing.
