10 Mar 2009 17:49
Dyna coils and ignition, 8mm wires, coil mod, pods, 4/1 exhaust on a 78 650sr. Need to replace carbs cause of structural damage to one of the bowls,,found a set of stock kz900 carbs pretty cheap, can I use these?

The 900 carbs are larger diameter at both the airbox and engine side so to use them you'll need pods that fit a KZ900 and intake manifold rubbers from a KZ900/1000. Bolt spacing is wider on a 900/1000 manifold so grinding the mount holes will be needed. Possible the carbs could be forced into stock KZ650 manufolds, but they would have to be brand new and pliable, old won't do. I measured once and I think there was around 4mm difference which is a lot to stretch rubber. Last problem is the 900 has dual fuel lines into the carbs where a 650 uses a single, so you'd need a T fitting to T off the line 2 ways. So possible, but not an instant bolt on swap.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Ron's right. I'm not sure but maybe you could use the carb to air box boots from a 900/1000 to hook up the air box.

Both Ron and Mark are correct... use VM26/28 carb holders with elongated holes. Also, test fit the 76 assembly as I recall there may be an issue with clearance of the carb holder bracket.
