I'm agreeing on air leaks more and more...I don't like buying carb boots either but unless you're certain there can't be any other possibilities I think you gotta' bite the bullet and get new manifolds. If you're nearby I'd help you get it straightened out or buy it from you. What part of the world are you from?

I bought a KLR600, as pictured, and sold the KZ.
Sorry guys. Thanks for your help.

Carb holders would have cost less.

Good Luck with the big water-cooled single.

Please, talk all the shit you want.
I spent week after week diagnosing endless DIFFERENT problems, and I don't even like cruisers. I haven't owned a street bike in a few years because I prefer dual sports two to one. An opportunity came up to get a great deal on the KLR, and to sell the KZ. So, I made a move. I genuinely appreciate all the help; the new owner will like the bike far more than I ever would have.

Lots of good information shared in this thread -- even TB's  --, likely beneficial to many current and future readers
, myself included. Akin to a hypothetical question being posed and considered.
Can almost see it now on TB's next pop-quiz, with multiple choice answers including upside down floats and all the numerous other possibilities noted and discussed, especially old leaking carb holders.

With all due respect the kz is 25 plus years old. When things get old there is usually more than general maintenance. When you replace parts they tend to last another 25 years. Dont let this discourage you from the classic bikes. They do take patience sometimes, good luck and ride safe

ones like this are kind of like trying to fix it over the phone they are tough to diagnose ,mostly be causeyou cant hear or see what has been done to the bike in the past.
