Probably a question for Jay.

I glommed a old stock LA sleeve brand 'stock size' sleeve
for kz1100/gpz1100. Natch, the first thing I do is measure it.

Outside is perfect match to the old sleeve.
Inside is enough on the small side that it's gonna need more
than a hone. I can turn to within a thousandth or two of the
final piston clearance. If there's any risk of the thing
going out of round when it's installed, I'll put it in and
let the machine shop with the jig bore it.

So what say...turn or bore???

Bore the sleeve after it's installed in the block, otherwise you are wasting your time.

My $0.00002 anyway :)

Think I'll take the old sleeve out and measure the hole. If it's
round, then I won't have to worry about the new sleeve changing
shape and can turn it. I already measured the outside of the new
sleeve and it's perfectly round.

Sound reasonable?

Yeah, go ahead, everyone sez install the sleevs into the block then machine it. So go ahead and turn it and install. Why bother posting the query? By the way, I agree with installing the liners, then machining

You definitely want the sleeve in the block when it's bored. The block to sleeve is about a .004" crush fit.

Do not expect the tollerance to be held if you bore the sleeve outside of the block and then install it.

Why post the query?

Because I want to know if it's reasonable or not.

If I already knew, the block would be in the oven.

Sometimes things are done a certain way because it's entrenched
"good practice", Everyone does it this way is taken to mean that
'this way' is the only way that works. I know the one way works.
I'm curious about the other.

I'm glad you asked.

Jay, Thanks.

I'm still curious. What happens that makes the other approach
to sizing (as opposed to finishing) unworkable?

It is a shrink ( interference fit) When the block cools down it is squeezing the sleeve, that can distort the bore. So put it in, let it cool, press it down when it has cooled, then finish the bore while it is being squeezed.
