What is the best way to check the valve to valve clearance,{eng on bench}so when I degree the cams I can be sure how far I can go without worries?

I think you are talking about piston to valve clearance when you degree the cams? if so as a rule of thumb you dont want to advance or retard anything more than 6 degrees, if you move that much you need to change cams, you should not have any clearance problems unless you have some high compression pistons installed

Not that I'm aware of, there have been rumors to the contrary, but they were simply rumors.

And I'm reasonably certain that I would know :D

I, and I think most of the other Moderators, are members there also (along with the 1000's of other sites that I am a member of).

Thanks Larry.I read your thread and appreciate it very much. I just like to get lots of input. Sometimes people do things different ways.

Here is a trick we have been passing on to KZ guys for years. If you are running big valve heads and/or long duration cams that might cause valve to valve issues when timing the cams;

Get an old stock cam and have the lobes ground off. Then when degreeing the cams, put the lobless cam on one side while you degree the other, then swap them around and put the lobless cam on the other side while you then degree the other cam. This way, the motor never turns over with all the valves opening until the cams are in time.

You can check the valve to valve by using a piece of 1/8th dead soft solder. Put it down the spark plug hole and maneuver it to get between the valves. Turn the motor over. If the valve don 't touch the solder, you are oK. If it does, it will mash the solder, then you can take it out and measure the flat part and know what the valve to valve is.

Jay
