larry, the info that you are giving us here is priceless. please keep it coming.
you're discussing things that most head porting guru's will NOT talk about. that is, specific techniques and theory.
this is fantastic. thank you, thank you, thank you.
i do some porting on turbochargers to decrease spool time, and i understand now why some of the stuff i do to them works.
(i see the photo's now)

You guys are all welcome. Everyone may not jump in and start porting their heads but having information and concepts explained will at the very least, allow someone to make an informed decision.
When you lay down your money for hard parts, it's comforting to know you chose what you did with at least some confidence that you'll achieve your goal.

Ported heads are perfect for turbo applications. Some people don't realize that. They think that just because the turbo is forcing the air into the port that the porting isn't important. It's quite the opposite though. Your turbo application can really benefit from good porting.

Im about to do a rebuild on my GPz750 turbo (ZX750E1)and am thinking of having a go at the cylinder head.
Im taking the engine out to 810cc, what would you reccomend regarding basic porting. Should I concentrate my efforts on the inlets or the exhaust?

1991, Zephyr 750. GPz750 turbo engine, 810cc, Garrett T25 turbo, GPz1100 throttle bodies, 310cc injectors, Power commander, Dyna coils, Lots more as well...

Go easier on the exhaust side and focus more on the intake ports. Put the ECU into Race Mode, send the throttle bodies to Pogue Machine and have them pro flow them and install the adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Then grind the staking off the waste gate adjustment rod and give it some boost.
Pogue's throttle body bore treatment is and excellent mod for that bike. I can get their phone number if you like. They're in Oklahoma and still will perform the mod. I spoke with them about 2 months ago.

Calculating Average Port Cross Sectional Area
a) measure the length of the roof of the port from the edge of the port entrance to the 45* cut in the valve seat...write down the measurement[roof]
b) repeat the process but measure the floor...write down the measurment [floor]
c) measure the port volume in cc with a burette...write down the measurement [volume]
Use these formulas to determine Avg. CSA for the port.
Roof - Floor / 2 = Port Avg Length
Volume / 16.387)/ Port Avg Length = AVG CSA
Port_Velocity = ( CFM * 2.4 ) / Cross-Sectional_Area
Keep in mind that calculated velocities are precisely that "calculated". Port shape can dramatically influence those calculations, thefore, a pitot tube and flowbench are the best way to measure local velocities.

The younger crowd probably never heard of Sid. There's not much info on him on the Internet. We used to send him quite a bit of TB work back in the mid 80's. They know their stuff and give you straight talk. I always respected Sid for that...still do.
