Resistance When Kicking Over
08 Sep 2006 20:49
I guess what I want to know is, should I be concerned. The bike runs (albeit fouling the plugs really Really fast) but it'll last for 30 miles or so.
But when I kick it over, it seems like almost every other time I go to kick it, the kick-starter sticks so that I stand up on it. If I let it up a bit and try kicking it over again, it works ok, until the next kick. (Can you tell it takes a few kicks to get it going after sitting for a bit?)
So it just doesn't seem right but since this is my first bike, I figured I'd ask.

Sounds like the kick starter gear is locking up occasionally, probably because it's rebounding too far. If you continue to stand on it when it's locked up you'll break the engine case.
It's easy to disassemble. Check it out.

You might just be hitting TDC on the comression stroke at a poor-leverage position of the kickstarter. What angle is the lever at when you wind up standing on it? It's not unusual for people to be stopped when kicking a high-compression engine, especially if they have low body weight.

I weigh 235 lbs and a KZ750 twin will stop me, if I'm silly enough to kick into a compression stroke
