The collars should line up but the 1000's have 8mm studs vs 6mm for the 900's. I'm not sure if it would work OK or not. You could always change your studs, but that seems like a lot of work. Maybe you'd just need a bigger washer under the nut? Hopefully someone will post that has actually tried it. I just wanted to mention that there is definitely a difference in studs and collars.

Redline says the smooth aluminum exhaust clamps for 8mm studs may also be used with 6mm studs, and includes extra washers in the fitment kit for using on 6mm studs.
Here's the Redline listing with info, pics, and prices:
Exhaust Clamps
The smooth oem exhaust clamps offered by Z1E don't mention being also for using on 900's. Wonder why?
Also wondering what changed on the 81 models.
Z1E version (same Z1E link 531blackbanshee already furnished)
Besides the difference in appearance, the smooth version is aluminum which may be polished, whereas the oem sunburst style is chrome-plated steel/pot-metal/whatever.
Am using 8mm studs on my 73Z1 pictured earlier in this thread.
Good Luck!

-Sidenote-
When I first got the VH system I read that they sometimes do not fit together correctly, as was the case when mine arrived. so I followed the suggestion here to bring it to a shop so they can expand the pipe a bit. I did this and the dudes told me not to bother, that its so close that it should fit with a little WD and some very minor burr removal. I say ok and put the exhaust back in the trunk of the car. Get home to try the suggestion of cleaning the connections and (note that the exhaust is pretty warm from being in the trunk) on a whim try to put the thing together without filing the burrs.
mmmmmmmmm, like a glove.
must have been that little warmth that expanded the metal and made it fit oh so right.
now i just have to get it apart to install on the bike...:S
