That is a classic symptom of the air injection system gone awry. I don't know if the twins have it, but if you have some hoses on top of the engine going to a diaphragm control device, that could be malfunctioning. Steell would probably know.

Yep, starting in 82 with the KZ750M1 the twins had air injection.

So is that what those hoses are that connect with the Vacuum Switch Valve, and coming out of the two cams? So do you think it would be a good idea to take the airbox out and put the filter pods on and seal up those hoses?

As a test, you just need to plug the two ports on top of the valve cover and cap everything off. Make sure you do not cap off crankcase ventilation, though! The air injection is a completely different system from the PCV system. It's easy to get the two mixed. Someone more familiar with the twins will have more precise info.

You don't have to get rid of the airbox to block off the air injection.
