I have a 77 kz650 in the putting together stage and I'm thinking cutting and removing the baffling from the mufflers and welding them back. Does anyone see this being a problem for the motor in the future or does it need so much back pressure to operate correctly?

From my expierence it would sound like crap. If it is a good exhaust they could be worth enough to buy a header. I think it would sound like megaphones and that ain't good. Roy

I agree with Roy it would sound pretty bad and if you reduce muffler restriction you may well have to re-jet to get it dialed in again. And I certainly wouldn't do it to a stock exhaust. There really would be no easy going back if it was crappy and it's hard to find stock exhaust it could be worth an aftermarket setup to get the sound you want. But be advised you are most likely looking at some carb work. It's not hard and there are tons of info in the archive to help. But consider it all first.

I'm not quite sure what "...welding them back" means.

Personally, I'd think it'd sound like Peewee Herman playing a rectal kazoo - and as noted, you'd be looking at a carb re-jet and tuning to get it running right.
