What’s the best route, adjustable gears, back stock? Hopefully I can drop the oil pan and find the tooth.

Questions
How many miles on motor ?
How long was it running  with a missing tooth ( If you have any idea from engine noises )
Stock parts should be fine ,  I would be worried about damage  or  excessive wear to the cam chain
I would inspect all the cam chain components  for damage.

Agree with Streetfighter.  Check every crevice in the head too.  Who knows how far it might have been flung when it broke?

You might be able to drop an extendible magnet down the chain space to try to pick up the broken tooth.  I would try that first, especially if the engine is still in the bike.  It's a bitch to drop the pan and clean the gasket properly before replacing the pan.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Little over 30,000 miles. I was literally trying to tune a set of 34 flat slides as it was idling I blipped the throttle a couple times then it started running rough then shut off , thinking it was the carbs tried restarting it , it wouldn’t start and sounded funny so I shut it down and started looking, the only reason i thought bout checking the timing was because the way it sounded when it shut off.

ok, didn’t think bout dropping the magnet, no damage stood out other than the missing tooth. The motor is still in the bike, I saw that gear and closed it up and had to walk away for a bit

Dont  be scared to split the cases
I dont use chains with master links  on the cam.
I would replace the chain .
