has anyone a better idea of what bike this fellow is selling?

Its a good 5 hour drive away from me, but more importantly I am stumped as to what he has for sale? He will send some more pics this weekend especially of the VIN sticker as I know that will help.

I think it's a 1978 KZ1000 with some reflectors attached to the forks. The valve cover tells me it's 1977 or 1978. The tach redline says it's 1978.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I stand corrected regarding the forks. Looking closer. I can now see that the reflectors look to be strapped on.

It is in pretty bad shape. But $500 Canadian ($392 U.S.) is not a bad deal considering you probably can recoup more than that in parts alone. The tank alone could be worth $200 or more if it is sound. If you are buying it to restore it as an investment, I would say don't bother. You will probably lose money. Better to go out and find a nice $4,000 example and be ahead of the game. Plus you get to enjoy the bike on the road immediately. From the looks of this bike, along with the purchase price, it is going take at least that much to get the it in good operating condition and decent appearance (tires, paint, brakes, etc, . And it would take a year or two doing the work yourself (more expensive if you don't).
Having said that, if you have a love for these bikes and enjoy working on them, then by all means this bike needs saving.

It a Kz1000 A 1977 or ‘78. I’m leaning towards 1978. As HRM mentioned the 8500 Redline is a 1978 feature. It has an A style rear seat stay. So the LTD seat is not original. Cam cover also in the 77-78 range. Spoke wheels and single front disc aslo puts it in the 77-78 A. I’d grab it. It looks complete. Ruff, and not OEM correct but still complete. It’s worth it.

I'd buy that bike any day of the week. Honestly doesn't look too bad. Needs a good wash and probably some new pipes.
