Exhaust leak?
14 Oct 2020 10:22
Just took my exhaust pipes off my 1982 kz440 LTD to wrap them. put them back on and started her up and the left side exhaust towards the engine sounds like it has a leak, after closer examination there seems to be no leak. it is very loud and almost sounds like it has a tick on that side. Another issue (may just be because it was colder out but it took forever to start up. longest it has taken so far.) Any tips?

Did you replace the round donut seals where the headers go into the head?

The only thing in there was two half donut gaskets when i took the pipes off. My guess is I possibly didn’t put them in correctly but they fit perfectly and i put them in how they came out. but it could also be because of the cross pipe halfway down the bike that connects the two pipes is not sealed enough, the gaskets where shot but still useable. Only thing with that is the sound is coming more towards the engine and not the back of the exhaust.

Those gaskets crush when you put the exhaust on. When you take the exhaust off unless you know they are there you wouldnt notice as when they crush the diameter expands to fill the port. You actually have to prise them out the port to replace them and invariably they are covered in soot and not immediately noticeable. Once used they need replacing.

You probably need to tighten up your exhaust at the engine side. Just be careful not to overtighten because the flanges will crack.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.
