shift drum pins
13 Apr 2020 20:37 - 13 Apr 2020 20:44
i'm wondering if anyone has a clear picture of where the long pin goes on the shift drum assembly. my manual is way to dark to tell where they want me to put it. i believe it is important for the neutral catch.
thanks guys

I am going to assume it's the same as a Z1. The first photo below shows the shift mechanism installed and you are looking down the bolt hole fo the neutral detente. The second photo shows the end of the shift mechanism in the neutral position. Note that the long pin goes under the cap in the bulge. When installed correctey it should be horizontal with the long pin on the left.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Are these the pins you are referring to? Number 6 and 7?
Sorry can't help other than to say play around with the assembly. Typically there is only one way the parts will assemble.

The long pin corresponds with the neutral position on the “end cap”. (Where the neutral switch gets its ground).
There is a unused hole in the shift drum that doesn’t have a pin. I am attaching pictures of the relation of that unused hole and the long neutral pin.
Hope this helps.

Hold up....hold up!!
Your first post said kz750e.
The 6-speed swap will use a 550 shift drum which had a totally different neutral pin index.
On the 550, the empty hole will be right next to the long neutral pin. Totally different from the 750!

I only have one manual for the zx600’s and it doesn’t go into any detail about the neutral plate index. But Kawasaki sells the shift drum as a complete assembled unit with the neutral plate and pins. The part number shows it’s the exact same drum for the kz,zr,zx,gpz550’s as well as the zx600a/b/c’s. So the pics I provided of the zx550 drum will work for your setup. I used a zx550 drum with my stock kz750e shift cover and the neutral switch lined up perfectly with the ground on the neutral switch plate.
