Ok , I guess I’ll be taking it apart to see what the what is. Is there a way for me to measure it or should I take it to a machine shop. And just say it’s in spec and only needs to be honed would that keep me in the standard ring size or go up a little, cause to be honed is to lose a little cylinder wall correct or no?

Take it to a machine shop. This requires very accurate measurements at several points in the bore. The only way to know if over sized parts are needed is to make the measurements.

Ok then that’s what I’ll do, in the mean time is it safe to drive it or can low compression cause some more damage internally, don’t want to cause more problems. The reason I ask is my wife likes driving it we sometimes go riding together. I’ve tied getting her to ride my Vmax but it’s little to heavy for her.

The reason I asked bout in the mean time I have one more rotation at the mill then I’m on vacation and was gonna break it down then, she’ll probably wanna ride before I do that , and while I’m running it threw my head is it possible to pull the head from the block while it’s in the frame or would I need to pull it. I appreciate everyone’s help by the way.

It is probably OK to ride, but keep a close eye on oil consumption. Yes, you can pull the head and cylinders with the engine in place.

Ok well that’s the plan and I will post what comes of it. Maybe I won’t find anymore surprises when I goin threw it. When it’s all done what PSI should I look for

If the cylinders only need to be honed you can stick with standard rings.

I don't know what compression you would see on a new engine (check your book) but you should be close to that number when you do the rings, unless you also have valve issues.

Normally when you pull the cylinders you would check out everything else you can check. Valve guides, seals and seats for starters. If you're doing the work yourself you will need a set of top end gaskets. I would buy OEM to ensure quality.

Be sure to take plenty of photos as you dismantle things. And buy a box of baggies to put parts into so you don't lose anything. I usually label the baggies as well.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Ok I’ll check my book, I plan on doing it myself all but the honeing part, so I’ll have to read my book. I recently sold my 83 V65 Magna but when I had it I did replace the cap on top of the valve spring and the keepers so I have an idea but not completely sure of it all. I have the cylmer manual to look threw as I go but definitely the pics and baggies.

You can also use the standard KZ factory service manual for most things. You can downlaod the 1981-83 manual from this site. It would be a good idea to chase down a copy of the police supplement for your year. The Clymer is better than no manual, but the factory manual and supplement are more specific, and usually more detailed.

The service manual details how to check the cylinder bore but I would recommend you make a copy of it and give it to an experienced machinist to do. He can do the honing as well. Well worth the expense.

I found one factory supplement for 1975 to 1985 Police, would that cover an 86?
