Stock sprockets? 1978 KZ1000A
04 Jul 2019 18:16
I recently picked up a 1978 KZ1000A. It's got spoked wheels, and unlike the models with mags, it's got an 18 inch wheel on the rear.
This bike has had several modifications by previous owners and it currently has a 35-tooth sprocket on the rear 18-inch wheel. It's not the original sprocket.
I know the 16-inch mag rears have stock 33-tooth sprockets, but I can't seem to find an answer as to what the stock sprockets are for the 1978A with the spoked 18-inch rear.
Anyone know what the stock sprocket sizes (drive and rear) are for this setup?

For 18 Inch rear wheel i would go with 35-tooth sprocket on up hill area.
If you ride more on high-ways a 33-tooth sprockets is the better choise.

From the rear hub & transmission diagrams at Partzilla for the 1978 KZ1000-A1, the motorcycle came stock with a 15T Fr sprocket & 33T Rear and 630x92 drive chain. You can check JT Sprockets to see what's available. Just enter KZ1000, then choose your model. Then click the JT sprocket part numbers to see what other models use the same sprockets. Z1Enterprises.com probably has them. I don't know if a 530 chain & sprockets are available.
