Can I re-use a head gasket if.....

Wondered if I can re-use a head gasket if I'd installed as new OEM (with head torqued to spec BUT motor never ran with it yet)? Had to remove head and again re-install due to replacing a bent valve. Normally if questionable, I'd replace it BUT money is tight. Thoughts anyone? Thanks!

Under those specific circumstances, reusing what is basically a new gasket would not bother me. Some people will no doubt feel differently.


However, I'm curious as to how you ended up with a bent valve after the head was installed. Was the cam chain off by a couple teeth when you tried to start the engine?

I would. Was the valve bent before and discovered later? What's the story?

I would. I'm using a head gasket I replaced a year before. I used copper spray and have had to retorque it a few times. I'd rather have new but it was a choice of riding or not. I'll be replacing it this time around.

Not sure what'd happened, installed head and cams per FSM, insured timing was spot on, insured valve shims were correct. When checking compression had noticed cyl #4 with NO compression. Insured valve wasn't hanging open due to possible shim problem. Pulled head and valves....used cordless drill to check for bent valves. Found one. Looked at piston, no evidence.

Any specific copper spray recommended? Much thanks!!

Just make it tacky.

I do have 4 new O rings BUT will this be a problem? Thanks! My guess is yes.

The o-rings will seal it but a little patch of liquid gasket on that spot do the Job.
