Oil pan Removal
14 Apr 2019 06:52
Hey guys, I was wondering if I had to remove the engine to take out the oil pan on my 82 550C? I looked at it and it seems possible with the bike on its side, but just wanted to see if anyone had experience before tearing into it. And if there’s any tips anyone could give me?

I know there has been more than a few that have on the 650s to get to there starter clutches and am thinking you probably can on your but not 100% sure.......... might be a little messy and making sure the o rings and gasket stays in place might be a little scary. Maybe be sure you glue em in place with your brand of sealer first and replace em all.
When I did mine I took the engine out and rigged it up on a car engine stand so I could spray it all out after removing the cyl and pistons. After flipping it and spraying it about 4 times each way I had it pretty much spotless.

I think KZB2 650 is correct. The 550 underside is very similar to the 650-750 underside and you can definitely take the pan off on those motors while still in the frame.
It's not a very common task on 550's since the starter clutches seem to be pretty bullet-proof on those.
Just curious... why do you want to take the pan off again? (Sorry if I missed it in another post.)
There is a page about 550 oil pan variations in case you are trying to replace a damaged/stripped one.

I’ll have to check that link out, I’m replacing because PO stripped out the oil drain plug and heli-coiled it. The coil broke when he screwed the bolt in place and completely marred up the threads. Instead of having the headache of repairing it, I wanted to get a new pan. The gasket needs to be replaced anyway
