Advance
18 Dec 2018 18:09 - 18 Dec 2018 19:26
Hello see if you guys can give me some light I have a 1979 kz 1000 LTD that I am about to replace the engine with a 1978 z1000 a engine. the engine in the bike has a dyna ignition system on it but I tried to take the advance out by holding the nut behind the screw and trying to unscrew counter clock wise. but I tried hard and it did not come loose, my brother told me to leave it alone as if it breaks I am kind of screw as I need that engine for another build that can handle that big engine.
I don want to use points and modify the actual installation.
So my solution I guess is to get another advance that works in my the same ignition system but I don't really know which one exactly as there are different models so I took pictures that I am attaching of the engines, advance and ignition system. I also read that different engines might use different degrees and I want to make sure that it will work the trick.
I really appreciate your time I don't know much about this electronic modificatios as I know some of them use the electronic box and some uses direct connection to the coils, by the way the bike has green coils.
I have been trying to find out how to remove that screw if it is counter clock wise or clock wise but, I have not been able to find out. Any light will be very appreciated.
Thanks

Your ignition system is an early Dyna III with an external eletronic box.
The new Dyna S have the ignition electronic integrated into the pic up housing.
To unscrew the advanver you have to turn counter clock wise.

The nut (I think it's 17 mm) behind the screw is used to rotate the engine for timing purposes. It fits on the dyna mechanism which fits on a small pin connected to the crankshaft and you don't want to break that pin because it will have to be replaced if you do.
To remove the ignition you must loosen and unscrew the smaller bolt. (I think it's 14 mm) The 17 mm head behind it will also come off with the smaller bolt.

Very early Z1's had the same mechanism but a different amount of advance. Most Z1's have the same one, and it was used at least up until 1978, which I think is the year of your bike. I see the 1979/80 advancer has a different part number but I suspect it uses the same amount of advance as the 1978 or earlier. In any case, it should not matter too much which one you use.
The service manual contains an excellent section on ignitions and advance.

The advancer on 1979 engines is set from 10 degrees before TDC to 40 degrees, between 1,350 rpm and 3,000 rpm.
The advancer on 1978 and earlier engines is set from 5 degrees before TDC to 40 degrees, between 1,500 rpm and 3,500 rpm.
I think the reason 1979 (and 1980) is different is to help achieve compliance with tougher emissions regulations at low rpm.
I think either one will work just fine but Jeff at Z1E will know for sure.

The stock advancers will have a stock lobe/cam on them.
The one you have, and are trying to loosen, has a Dyna lobe/cam on the stock advancer.
So even if you find another advancer, you will need a Dyna lobe/cam to put on it if you are using the Dyna ignition.

Could try heat (propane torch) on the bolt head to help it come loose, and which would also help break the seal of any red loctite that might have been applied when the bolt was screwed in.
Good Fortune!
