Bike wont find neutral when idling...?

Say I ride the bike up and down the road and stop in the driveway. I go to find neutral to shut the bike down but I cant. It wont even tap into 2nd. I shut the engine off and then I can easily pop into neutral. Is there a reason for this?

The bike's a 75 KZ400.

Thanks

It won't shift into second unless the bike is moving, that's Kawasaki's patented "Neutral Finder" feature :)
Just so you know why it still won't shift into second when you are sitting still after you get the current problem fixed.

Are you downshifting into first as you are coming to a stop?

The Kawasakis can only shift into 1st and Neutral when the rear tire is not rotating. So when you pull into a driveway, do this:

1. Shift all the way down into first.
2. Shift "up" once.

You'll THINK you're in second, but as long is everthing is working correctly you'll be in neutral.

3. Now kill the engine.
4. Release the clutch.
5. And try and move the bike. Does it move without the clutch? If so, you're in neutral.

When I can't find neutral I put it first gear and apply the front break, then ease off the clutch a little (just enough to put a load on the transmission). Reel in the clutch and it goes right into neutral.

I'll have to try it the other way...

I do not believe this is accurate, at least as far as my bikes are concerned. I downshift into first and use compression braking as I am approaching a stop (stop sign or red light) almost every time. I have also accidentally shifted into neutral when shifting lazily between 1st and 2nd while traveling at low speed. Very aggravating when I roll on the throttle, and there is nothing to the back wheel.

what he was saying is you cannot shift into 2nd gear when bike is sitting still,it is possible to hang up between gears when shifting, thats why i dont use clutch so i only have to concentrate on what my foot is doing.
