valve clearance
13 Mar 2012 22:52
my manual says correct valve clearance is 0.15 but is this just a maximum number or is this where is should be exactly. only one valve allowed a 0.15 mm feeler gauge and the rest were either 0.12 or 0.10. i guess im wondering if i should be looking at smaller shims from whats in there now? im gonna double check these #'s cause i was kind of in a rush. thanks again

What bike are you working on? That seems to be a rather large clearance. My GPz1100 engine are set at between .03 to .07 thousands clearance. .15 does not sound right. Usually the manual will tell you between several numbers as long as the clearance is between those numbers you are fine.

Including information about bike year and model is helpful to viewers and usually elicits better responses.

Z1 valve clearance spec is 0.002~0.004 in. (0.05~0.10 mm).
Some folks recommend an exhaust valve clearance up to 0.15 mm.

i always set my clearances the same .004" on the intake and .006" on the exhaust side or at least as close to that as i can geti set them a bit looser than factory because i'm basically lazy and i only check my valve clearances once a year or so unless its my race bikes, if you run web cams they call for .006" on both sides. looser is better than tight if you can't get right at .006" then go looser don't go tighter.

You can run intake clearances at .05mm or .002" just fine, exhausts at .075mm or .003"
IF - IF you check them at regular intervals thruought the season.
If your inclined to just set and forget for a while, you can go as large as .015mm .006" or more if u can stand the chatter.

Valve clearance should be between .08mm and .18mm. Anywhere near the middle of those two measurements is ideal, but as long as you are between them you're ok. Ed

I´m setting valve clearances on my KZ 1100 81´. I was thinking of setting all of the valves to 0,15 clearance (manual specs form 0,15-0,05mm) or would be better if i set exhaust valves to 0,15 and intake to 0,10?

Trojan, setting the valve lash to the smallest number will necessitate more frequent adjustments since the gap typically gets smaller as the valve and seat wear. I cannot imagine that setting the intake valves below spec to start with can produce good results. An old-time kz drag bike builder once told me that these engines run best when the intake valves are adjusted to the middle of the range, and the exhaust valves at the loose (biggest number) end.

Sorry; my mistake. Service manuale states clearances from 0,15 to 0,05 (not 0,5). So 0,10 for intake is on the middle and 0.15 for the exhaust on the loose side.
Thanks!!!, will set them like that
