Crankcase breather question

So is there any situation in which the breather could suck air? Would a filter just keep stuff from crawling/falling/getting flung into the vent if you didn't have a longer hose routed down & out?

About the only thing that might get in would be spiders, but i don't think they like the smell or feel of oil and gas, so would probably stay out.
