Tach Cable

so i had friends over and i fired up the bike..

to my suprise, the tach cable had come out of the head? so now it's hanging loose. the rubber parts comes down and there is a coil of wire that comes out of it?

How does this attach, is there something loose in the engine now that i have to worry about?

Im not really sure how it connects or pics up engine speed, maybe an expanatino of that would help clarify..??

The tachometer cable usually is connected to the head by a retaing screw. Some engines have a different way to attach the cable. If your cable has come apart, it might be easier to buy a new one.

There is probably a worm machined on the exhaust cam the tach cable drive engages, making the tach indicate when the engine turns.

I'd suggest replacing any of the rubber seals the tach cable goes through as they get dry & crack, letting oil make a mess of the front of the engine

The part that's still on the engine has a piece of the tach cable in it. Unscrew the knurled nut from the engine and see if the broken piece of the cable goes with it. A new cable should fit right on the engine using th knurled nut. See if the oil seals are gone or worn out inside the nut.

Your cable is shot. You need to buy a new one and install it by removing the 2 knurled nuts (one at the tach & one at the engine). When you get the new cable it will be obvious how to replace it. Also, lubricate the cable before installing it. Ed

that was probably one fo the easiest fixes i've done...

also the original owner said the speedo did not work..

so while i was monkeying around with the tach i checked the speedo, and the speedo was just loose.. so i plugged it in and it worked fine;) also took a ride to day..
