KZ1000 engine in a KZ750L3 frame?

Hiya, friends.
The bike is parked for the winter, but my buddy's riding up from SF for Christmas, and it's got me thinking about our planned trip to Alaska (or Baja... either way) next year. My engine's leaking some oil out of the head gasket, because that's what it does, no matter how often I replace it.
But then I saw this ad: seattle.craigslist.org/tac/mcy/2752848805.html
What do you guys think? Could I throw a KZ1000 engine into my KZ750 L3 body? I've done a little preliminary research and all I've found is that the KZ1000 seems to be a little bit taller than the 750. There's a little bit of space, I believe, so maybe that'd be okay? What about torques? Would I rip the swing arm off my bike? Is there something I'm not thinking about?

I hate when I fail and someone shuts me up with a post to a relevant thread. However, I read it and don't see anything about mounting bolts. There's a LOT of conversion this guy did that I'm not looking to do. I'm nowhere near that cool! Some day!

I dont see why you couldn't put a bigger motor into your bike. Honestly though, im not in the position to say it would work or not. i dont even know what 750 motor mount hardware looks like. At the very worst i think you could do it with some modifications to some of the mounting. Im thinking of doing a similar project only with a 76' KZ400 frame and an 83' suzuki GS300 motor. but the only reason i want to do that is because the KZ400 frame looks SO much kewler than the suzuki frame.

You need to make new motor mount plates to mount the engine in the frame. Be sure to mount the motor as low as possible to avoid hitting the tank with the valve cover.
The only tools you need to make the mounts are a hacksaw, drill, and a file.

Thank you, Steell and Kitten Tooth! This is fantastic news indeed! I work in a metal shop, so I can get pretty fancy with the mounts, and now I plan to.
You think the rear through-bolt will be the same, or will that need a pair of hangers as well?
And is the engine going to be powerful enough that I should be concerned about the frame crumpling when I crank it?

I had plans to put together a 900 engine and install it in my 650 before I found the 750 engine, from everything I "read", they will fit with alterations to the motor mounts, but several articles mentioned that you might have to pull the engine to even remove the very top cam cover.

Look around for pics of a 750 Turbo frame and brace accordingly.
So, you do all the work and get the 1000 mounted and running in the 750 frame, then you look at that little skinny 18" tire on the back and think "No way is that going to work!", so you research swing arms, rims, and tires, and end up doing a swing arm swap so you can use a 170/55/17" rear tire, then you discover you need an offset front sprocket to get the chain past the tire!
It never ends :laugh:

There will be no issues with the motor 'over-powering' the frame. The frames are very similar. An issue that has been hinted at but not overtly mentioned (EDIT...mentioned by Godfrey above) is that while the KZ1000 motor will fit into a KZ750 frame, others that have done this mentioned that, once installed, there is not enough clearance to remove the valve cover ...rephrased...install the motor with the valve cover on the head. This also brings up the touchy point that in order to adjust the valve clearances, you have to pull the motor

Yes it will work and you can still remove the valve cover easily. In fact with the way I have mine set up it is easier to remove the 1100 engine valve cover than it is on my 650, it has more room. I mounted mine as low as possible in the frame. There is no way around having to weld new front motor mount brackets though. You can use the existing rear mount and make spacers to get the motor centered. I noticed on mine you cannot center the motor exactly due to the left side of the engine hitting the frame so with that the engine is about 1/8" set further to the right. This does not pose a problem. The front mounts are the most difficult. You will have to cut off the mounts on the left side along with the right lower mount. You can keep the upper right one but have to fab up a new bracket so the engine will sit lower. The front lower ones you will have to fab and weld new mounts. It is way easier to purchase an empty engine case off of ebay and use it for mock up than to try to muscle the heavy engine in and out until you get it all right, they are pretty cheap. I had mine in and out probably 100 times before I welded all the brackets in for good.
Also the one thing I did not consider was the exhaust. Nothing is going to just bolt on. You will need an exhaust for the KZ1000 engine but the you will have to fab up the exhaust mounts for the rear. Another consideration is the rear sprocket alignment, wiring, ignition system. They are both different. It is not as easy as it looks to get everything to work right with some patience and the right tools you can get it to work quite well.

Good to know! So the trick, then, are the front motor mounts.
