The brakes do not drag, engine was not smoking, ran with cap open. Would the #1 intake valve not closing cause the overheating? The motor did seem hotter on the left side.

Common sense should tell you that's the first thing you need to address

If that's a glass bodied fuel filter please replace it, they have caused more than a few car and motorcycle fires. They crack & leak from vibration, so there's a great potential for a nasty fire.

Get a new one from www.z1enterprises:

That was my thought a good place for a fire looking to happen.

+2 on the fuel filter, loose it fast!

As for the mains I run 117.5's in my E1 with pods and 4-1, your pods looks more restrictive but it might be just the photo. I just tried dropping the pilots back to the stock 15's and will go back to the 17's as there is too much of a roll on/off with the needle set to 4, very twitchy on the roll on in exiting curves.

Also those aren't the carbs that came on the bike, they would have been Mikuni VM28SS and not what looks like VM26's on there though they might be the VM28's without the pumpers. If they are VM26's then you should get it to run fairly well except it will be a little slower on the excel and won't reach as high a top end.

Those aren't 28's. No air screws....

You can piss around with carburetors till you're blue in the face and get nowhere until you address the tight valve problem. That's first base.

Thanks Larry, didn't look for that, also have to agree that if the tolerance dropped out on #1 then you need to find out why first before going any further.
