kz1000e-1 overheating

Hello again everyone,
Well Ive got my bike running but now I have an overheating problem. After not more than 5-7 miles it is very hot and starts to sputter unless I give more throttle. I have replaced the carb. boots and checked the timing with a timing light and the "F" mark is dead nuts on the case mark. I put new o-rings on the pilot screw, the old ones were cracked and hard. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I guess you need to explain what condition your bike is in?

Does it have the stock exhaust

Does it have the airbox

Has it been rejetted

Did you ever try opening the gas cap to see if that helped? Vapor lock

Start with the basics.

Clean air filter?
Clean fuel filter?
No leaks around carb inlet boots or manifolds?
Clean oil and filter? (It does have oil, right?)
Valves adjusted properly?
Carb fuel level correct?
Carbs properly adjusted and synchronized?

If the engine has been heavily modified and you ride in heavy traffic or flog it a lot, you may need an oil cooler.

What brand of sparkplug being used? Proper heat range? I've had more than a few NGK's fail new right out of the box. Try Accel or Denso if you can get them.

Check the color of the plugs, bet they are white.

A complete list of mods to the bike like air filter/pods, exhaust, valve, ignition, jetting, old boots or new, etc., would be best to get the proper advice.

What year and model is your bike? Is it popping when you let off the throttle? 112.5 on the mains sounds like it may have never been rejetted for the 4-1's and pods. Which would account for it running hot. The spark plug color will tell you for sure.

Joe

Edit: Sorry didn't see the your quote about the plugs being tan in color.

I don't know what carbs came on the bike but I would go 20/117 or 20/ 120 on the jets. Roy

The bike is a 1979 kz1000e-1
It ran great before I had to replace the front chain guide. As a result of the chain guide failure the cams rotated enough to bend all intake valves. Replaced those, ground valves and reset clearances.
Today I just re-checked the clearances and all are good except #1 intake. Would that cause the overheating?

gas cap vents properly --- would test run with cap ajar.

fuel level
--- should pass the "clear tube" test.

Perhaps fuel line kinked or clogged?

have an overheating problem. After not more than 5-7 miles it is very hot and starts to sputter unless I give more throttle -- am wondering why overheating would cause the engine to start sputtering. Would think the engine would start smoking, and maybe even begin first stages of seizure, but not necessarily accompanied by sputtering.

Brakes dragging?

Does bike roll coast freely when not under power?

Good Fortune! :)

Hello,
The brakes do not drag, engine was not smoking, ran with cap open. Would the #1 intake valve not closing cause the overheating? The motor did seem hotter on the left side.
