Why do you need to reset the cam chain tensioner?

I have read that you need to reset the cam chain tensioner after setting valve clearance on a KZ1100. I would like to understand why. As there is no mention of this in the manual section on setting the valve clearance.

if your bike is a j-series without the idler sprocket between the cam shafts you have a cam chain guide built into the bottem side of valve.
when you remove the valve cover the tensioner will automatically take the slack up which make it a pain in the ass to get the valve cover back on .
