Mods for the biggest HP gains=GPz550

What are some modifications for the biggest HP gains to be found in the 84-85 GPz550 other than exhaust and pod filters. I figure porting the intake bowls and enlarging/smoothing Int/Exh passages should help.

i think the gpzs already have a pretty decent head right out of box and hogging things out is not always the best thing to do,you end up loosing power if not done right.id say to see if you can find a set of drop in style cams and maybe tweak you carbs a little;)

Like Wiredood said, the heads are pretty good already. There are various cams available out there. You may even consider Zephyr 550 parts, like cams or carbs.

I was thinking of using a set of KZ550 cams. I'm thinking this will make the bike stronger at the bottom end without changing gearing? I'm not looking for top speed or top end as I like strong 0-60 blasts!. I like the way the my standard 550-A pulled at the bottom and midrange. With the higher compression on the GPz should make it scream! Will these cams do the job??

Then you're not looking for more HP.. you're looking to increase torque and low-end power.

HP is really only used to get more top-end speed.. isn't it?

My friend has a gpz550 with KZ550 A cams. Yeah, it's nice and smooth, pulls vey well off the line, but wheezes out at higher RPMs. It's great in the city, especially with a passenger, but not as fun on the highway.

Right! more torque and all around power before 8K RPM for back country roads. Top end is not as much fun as smoking through 4 gears from a dead stop. My old KZ550-A4 model was a blast in the lower gears!

Sorry, I'm bored at work... I don't have really any good answers for you. Looks like the rest have pretty much answered the question. However, there is no sustitute for displacement.... Engine kits and compression increases would make the biggest gains.

I can't think of anything else but a wisecrack, sorry.

Odds are that while keeping the current displacement, you won't achieve much more than a ten percent gain before you have to get fairly radical with the mods.
