Plastic Fuel can.
14 Feb 2026 09:29
any recommendations for a replacement fuel can? my fuel refilling container has a crack and needs to be replaced. it's old. the new ones nowadays have various different fill spouts that seem like they're going to be fiddly. Thanks.

Unfortunately they all now come with a PITA "safety" filler on them. I guess the best you can do is find the one that annoys you the least!

We've seen fuel cans with old-style spouts at yard and estate sales. A vendor at Mid-OH had a dozen or so a couple years ago, but they were all sold the first day. We have a few, but they'll only be available when pried from our cold, dead hands.
Try Craigslist & fleaBay for old-style cans.
"Modern" no-spill / spill-proof / "smart" (?)-fill nozzles are little better than spring-loaded butt plugs with automatic fart vents. At least that's what we've heard...
There are kits that claim to replace the spouts on newer fuel cans with conventional flexible spouts sans the fiddly parts. We're only aware of them, can't vouch for any of them.

After every class we have to top up 17 motorcycles. I've found that this 'MidWest' can works well. It's particularly good at shuting off the flow when the fuel gets within 2" of the cap.
It's a bit 'fiddly' but not too difficult.

KZQ's pic. that one has a spring that seems to require too much force to operate it. however, the spring can be modified or possibly changed and a vent added. to improve its usability. it might be possible to swap over my old spout to a new can. at the minimum I'm expecting to add a vent. then replace the spout if the safety spout is a nuisance. something the careless shouldn't do. Safety 3rd !!! ha ha.

You can buy old-style plastic spouts on Amazon for a few bucks and it turns the new "safe" can into a usable one.

tuffjug.com Take a look at Tuff Jug plastic containers. they come in different colors and are priced reasonably. they have a long spout that works well on motorcycles. I think by not calling / selling them as a fuel container they don't have to follow the crazy government rules / restrictions on the spout.

KZQ, you can pull that "red" piece off the filler, they come right off. Still retain the sealing of telescopic end black plastic piece without all that fiddly pushing for operation. I too bought a couple 5GAL exact ones and that's what i do to the ones have. Ed, guarantee those are Chinese Yellow flexible spouts!! And if California knew you'd ordered and using them therein the EPA Task Force might come a knocking, ha.

Yes, Somehow my lineman's pliers were attracted to the red plastic lock. They griped it firmly and twisted it off while I continued to enjoy the auto stop feature. Which by the way won't work if you vent the can.
Thanks
