buying Z1R; opinions?

Hi all; I will be driving 1400 miles to pickup a 1978 Z1R(after the weather breaks). The negotiated price is $3000 based on some photos sent by the seller. My intent is to bring it back to it's former glory- as close to original as I can. The photos show a lot of clues to the bikes history- a lot of missing or non original parts. I have been checking the parts diagrams, and trying to locate parts but z1r parts are scarce and costly.
I would value the opinion of this forum on whether this bike appears to be worth it or should I wait for another one.
Pros : newer paint, matching #"s, seems to run good.
Thanks to you all, Chris

Hello and welcome Chris

With all due respect you will never be happy with that bad surprise bike.
The seller trying to make quick money.
In my opinion $3000 and 1400 miles for a fresh paint junkyard find, no way !!!
For $3000 you will get better bikes like this.
Wait for another better Z1R.

I think the asking price is high, it wants a lot of costly work to bring it back to its former glory, personally I would pay more for a better example, parts for a z1r are expensive.

thank you SWEST, that article has some great detail. I grew up in a small town with two of these in our group, and two of the 1980 Z1R's.
I bought my MKII new, still in the crate, even though my heart was set on the LTD of that year. The reason I am posting here is because I am so obsessed with the 1978 Z1R, I just wonder if I am willing to pay too much, and need some fresh eyes.
Thanks again, chris

You can have the 3k on you and dicker with him on the price. $500 or more off will get you a few things. I paid $250 for a genuine Kawasaki front fender at Z1E. It adds up in a hurry.
