Start up in heated winter storage
08 Nov 2015 10:48 - 08 Nov 2015 12:03
Is start up say every 2-3 weeks for a short period an issue with condensation if the bike is in heated storage at 60 degrees F? I know condensation is an issue with start up in non heated storage unless you bring the motor to operating temperature and so much so it is not suggested.
Thanks

I wouldn't think it would be a problem, but you should let the engine come up to operating temperature regardless of whether or not it's in a heated garage. I start mine throughout the winter about once per week and let it run 10 - 15 minutes until the mufflers are warm. I have a garage, but it's not heated. I've done this since I bought my KZ650 in April, 1977, and it has never caused a problem. It keeps the carbs from getting clogged with gasoline goo; keeps the cylinder walls, cams, etc. oiled; and keeps the battery charged. When spring comes the bike is ready to ride. Ed

Ed thanks. How long do you figure it should idle for then to bring the motor up to temperature assuming it is started in the 60 degree F garage with the door then open? Bike is a 1000J3.

That's hard to say. You can feel the back end of the muffler. It should be pretty warm to the touch, but not so hot that it burns your hand. I let mine run 10 - 15 minutes depending on hot cold it is outside, so I suspect 10 minutes or so should be enough without a fan if the garage is around 60 degrees. Ed
