Z550/TK22 carb site needs new host, any suggestion
03 Sep 2015 07:27 - 03 Sep 2015 07:28
Comcast is discontinuing the free online storage that I've been using to host my site for KZ related info and TK22 carbs in particular (links are in my signature). (And by free, I mean as part of the service that I pay a bunch of money for every month.)
Does anybody have a suggestion for free server space without ads?
I started on geocities, which was free with small banner ads on top of the pages. I could live with that. Yahoo bought out geocities, then shut it down. Luckily, at that point Comcast gave customers free online space, so I transferred everything there. IT is really nice to not make users sit through a bunch of ads or deal with popups. I try to keep the pages streamlined to load fast, which is what people want when they are trying to get bike info. I fear that any free sites will have massive advertising annoyances.
Comcast may allow me to purchase space for an additional fee, but it's not like I make any money with this site.

Hi Lou,
Would you consider moving it here? I haven't checked it out with the rest of the Admin team but my bet is that it can be done.
Take a look at the "Articles, Riding and Wrenching" tab on the main menu on the home page. Your pages would fit there just fine. You would still get credit for their authorship and would be able to update them as necessary. Alternately, they would fit well in the 550 sections of the FileBase.

Moving it here seems like a no brainer. It's obvious that there is quite a few members willing help financially .... So why not?

This is being discussed in the mod forum. Looks like a go just how to work it out is all. I'm all for it.

Thanks, guys. The problem is I still need a server for my other sites, which are non-motorcycle related. I have several. It wouldn't make sense to have a site hosted here for audio-related tech pieces. I still have a month or so to figure it out. I was just wondering if anybody here had any experience with online storage hosts. Reliability and ease of access had been an issue on geocities and yahoo, so I'm looking for experiences related to that too. The comcast FTP is really convenient, even though it only works from my home computer. It acts like another folder on my hardrive, but is actually the comcast server.

Have you looked at Byethost? I used to have a fairly large site with them and their little ad banner was really unobtrusive.

Testing this Amazon S3 storage/hosting:
gpzweb.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/
Not free, though it does have a free trial.
I tried Byethost as well as several other free or low-cost hosting sites and they all had issues. Some forced you to use their website template (ridiculous), and others had file size limits. Byethost had a 10MB limit which won't work for the online manuals. Also, it meant I'd have to manually upload all of the other files in 10MB chunks. There were various other problems with other hosts. Reading the reviews on most of them shows most users are unhappy about all of them.
The payment system for Amazon S3 is really confusing, and I have no idea how much it will cost since there is a convoluted system of paying based on downloads and storage space and when/if you delete items etc.
