KERKER for my MKII
14 Mar 2013 01:02 - 14 Mar 2013 01:05
I've spent 18 months trying to find a set of clean take-offs for my 1979 MKII with no luck and will probably go KERKER
KERKER on eBay
This new pipe is not quite period correct. I'm guessing there is no way to swap out the emblem?
I remember someone discussing this topic.
Anyone?
Wayne
PS: I live in Winnipeg and cannot order the pipe from a Canadian dealer. They only bring KERKER's line of Harley pipes to Canada. Does that suck or what? How do they think they became the company they are today if not for Japanese superbikes in the 70's and 80's?

You are correct, the emblems will differ on a period pipe as compared to this more recently produced pipe. The emblem itself (on the new pipe) will be larger and will be pop-riveted on, thus making it easy to remove (if you can ever find an older emblem). I seem to recall someone in Europe making some reproduction metal exhaust emblems that more closely resemble the original period emblems.

Very nice! Yes, you can swap the emblem. With some careful welding, grinding and blending of the emblem rivet holes, you can hide them. Then find a vintage Kerker tag and mount it. If nothing else, get some dimension and get a Kerker tag machined on a CNC mill to mimic the original badge. In my opinion it would be well worth the effort to get that look you're after.
Show some pics of the MKII and the Z1-R.

Is it just me or does anybody else remember the 70s kerkers using a sticker instead of a riveted on tag?
I realize it was the 70s/early 80s and there was lots of dope, but I just don't remember labels being riveted on those particular pipes

Naw...it is just you  . Just poking at you. However, are you perhaps remembering the 'Kawasaki by Kerker' exhaust systems? Those Kerkers had a metallic exhaust label that was not riveted, but rather, used some sort of adhesive.

I happen to have an original Kerker pipe with the kerker tag. The tag is aluminum and rivited in place, they are also impossible to find so if you have one keep it. Mine was pretty rough and I went looking for one. I searched for years and never found one. I ended up re-conditioning the one I had and using it.

Wireman, I have Kerkers with the metallic stickers and Kerkers with the small cast badge that has two tits sticking out the back of it that presses into two extruded holes in the meg.
Baldy, that is the era correct badge for your ELR pipe. That is what was coming out in the early 80s.
I'd think the pipe for the MKII should have the small Kerker cast badge on it.
This is one for my KZ550. The one with the sticker was on a 1000. That sticker is long gone.

This is a somewhat metallic decal I got from a seller on ebay. I doubt it would hold up for any length of time if you stuck it on a meg. If you were to get industrious and built an insulating pad to stick it to, it wouldn't get nearly as hot as if it was applied directly to the megaphone. Just trying to get something that looks right for the old Kerker.

Yeah, that is one of the ones I'm thinking of...and there is a fellow in Europe (possible Germany) doing reproductions of the vertical-lettered Kerker emblem.

 Kerkers are LOUD! I have one on my ZRX1200. Yup, real LOUD without the baffle... :pinch:
I never ride it without a baffle. the comp baffle sounds so RIGHT, just couldn't leave home without it.
